The design of the website is the second step of our activity, with which the technical part begins. First we start with the homepage. When it is ready, it is demonstrated to our clients for approval or for modification if it does not match their expectations. Then it continues with the other pages on the site.

Testing

The introduction of the euro and online shops: What retailers in Bulgaria need to know
In January 2026, Bulgaria is expected to adopt the euro as its official currency – a change that is far from being merely a financial or political event. For online stores that have been operating entirely in Bulgarian levs until now, this also poses a serious technological challenge that requires timely adaptation. If you run an online store or are just starting one, it is important to understand what to expect, what your obligations are, and how to prepare so that you comply with the new regulations. In this article, we will guide you through the most important aspects of the transition to the euro and show you what steps to take now to prepare your online store and comply with legal requirements. What does the transition to the euro mean for online stores? According to the national plan of the Ministry of Finance , Bulgaria plans to introduce the euro as its national currency on 1 January 2026. However, the transition period has already begun with the introduction of dual price display – all products and services must be displayed in both Bulgarian levs (BGN) and euros (EUR), accompanied by the symbol or ISO code for the respective currency. This also applies to online commerce. For online store owners, this means a number of mandatory changes in the way prices are displayed, orders are processed, accounting is done, and the user experience is provided. Mandatory requirements for online stores 1. Dual display of prices – all prices must be displayed simultaneously in BGN and EUR. This includes: Category pages, if there are products and/or services there; Product pages; Shopping cart pages; Checkout pages; The final amount to be paid by the consumer; Confirmation emails; Automatically generated invoices; Installment prices when purchasing products on credit; Delivery prices; Emails containing information about a given order; PDF or other documents and reports generated by the platform. 2. Valid exchange rate – the official fixed exchange rate is used for conversion: 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN. The exchange rate itself is not subject to rounding, but the final prices in euros are calculated based on it and rounded to the second decimal place, in accordance with standard mathematical rules. For example, a price of €5.567 should be rounded to €5.57. 3. Equal display – prices in levs and euros must be written in the same font, color and size so as not to create the impression that one currency is ‘primary’ to the other. 4. Ban on price increases – during the transition to the euro, a mechanism will be introduced by the Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) and the National Revenue Agency (NRA) to monitor speculative price increases. The exact equivalence of the price in euros must be transparent and visible on the website. 5. Minimum period of dual display – 3 months before introduction and at least 12 months thereafter. This means that throughout 2026, online stores will have to display prices in both currencies. How to prepare your online store technically? We at Intelligent Web Solutions advise you to start preparing for the transition to the euro in stages as early as mid-2025, especially if you use custom platforms or have integrated warehouse and ERP systems. All our customers can contact us now so that we can plan the necessary changes in time and ensure a smooth transition by the deadline set by the Republic of Bulgaria. The most important technical steps include: Adding functionality for dual currency display on all category and product pages; Changes to the shopping cart page before the checkout page; Changes to the checkout page to show both currencies in the final amount; Updating the invoicing system and automatic document generation (PDF, emails, etc.); Adding an explanation of the exchange rate used – in the form of a pop-up or information bar at the top of the website (header) so that the user can clearly see that prices in euros are calculated at the official fixed exchange rate; Updating promo codes, vouchers, discounts and other elements with correct calculation in euros. Testing the entire user journey to avoid inconsistencies, especially when applying promotions, discounts, vouchers and gift cards. If you use WordPress (WooCommerce), OpenCart, Shopify or Magento, most of these systems have plugins or built-in features for displaying multiple currencies – but they must be checked and configured in accordance with Bulgarian law. In the case of custom solutions, it is highly recommended that you consult your web developers to ensure that the process is as secure and legally compliant as possible. Best practices when switching to the euro Display the fixed exchange rate clearly and visibly – for example, below the final price or in a banner in the website header. Use a tooltip/pop-up with an explanation – for example: ‘The price in euros is calculated at the fixed exchange rate of 1 EUR = 1.95583 BGN.’ Test the user experience on mobile devices – pay attention to how the two currencies are displayed on smaller screens, such as a phone or tablet; Don't wait until the last minute – the technical adaptation of online stores requires time and precision. If all our customers contact us at the last minute, we may not be able to respond to everyone in time. Therefore, we recommend advance planning and early communication; Update your advertising campaigns – especially Google Shopping and Facebook, where currency is a key element for approval. What problems may arise if you do not adapt in time? Failure to comply with legal requirements and sanctions from the National Revenue Agency and the Commission for Consumer Protection; Loss of consumer confidence due to unclear pricing; Technical errors in payments, especially when using different payment operators; Problems with accounting and invoicing; Inability to participate in online campaigns based on the euro, such as international promotions or joint partnerships.
